Kalahari
Bushmen Tour–April 4-23, 2004
This journey
will take us back in time to follow the footsteps of the San
Bushmen of Africa, the oldest known inhabitants of the
earth. They, and their simple way of life, were subjected to the pressures of "progress" by
first advancing African Tribes and later the Dutch and English colonialists.
As a result of the physical encroachment on what was their living and hunting
space, by African and White people, the wildlife on which the San depended for
sustenance, diminished and they were gradually forced to withdraw from their
abundant lands to the more inhospitable areas the others did not want. What has
happened to the Bushmen is a microcosm of what is happening globally and a wake
up call for mankind.
In retracing the steps of the Bushmen we will start off in one of South Africa’s
big National Parks—Hluhluwe in Zululand, which literally takes us into
the animal kingdom, where we are the guests not the masters in control. This
gives us the sense of what it was like in the beginning for the Bushmen people,
when life was just abundance. Our time spent in the Hluhluwe Game Reserve offers
the opportunity to leave behind the stresses and strains of our present hectic
lifestyle and to attune to the reality of nature and Africa's breathtaking wildlife.
No words can describe the effect that being in the African Bush has on one.
During our tour we will get a taste of what it was like for the Bushmen to be
forced to move from their summer hunting grounds in the spectacular Drakensberg
Mountains and where they left behind a legacy of thousands of San Rock art paintings
depicting their ancient culture and way of life. The San Bushmen lived in complete
attunement with nature. To them everything is connected and there is no hierarchical
structure in nature—each is an integral part of the whole. Our journey
will offer insights to this sacred way of living, enabling us to feel how we
as nations and as individuals have lost this sacred connection to life—and
how we have lost our connection within Self. Travelling through the magnificent
scenery of the Drakensburg, one cannot help but be inspired by its awesome majesty.
Here we will connect with oneness at a soul level by attuning to the sacred places
once used by the Bushmen long ago.
We will meet with some very special Bushmen people in the Kalahari desert and
receive the gift of connecting with them at a heart level. To walk in the veld
with a bushmen is an insightful experience— where we really begin to understand
a little about the interconnectedness of life. We will join our Bushmen friends
in sacred ceremony, meditation and prayer.
Our time spent in the African Bush with these ancient people will bring us closer
to our own true natures allowing us to delve into the greater wisdom of our own
lives. May we return from this journey with a greater understanding of our place
in the web of life that will enrich each of us as we become part of the healing
and transformation of our planet. |
